The all-new 2020 GMC Sierra HD has a handsome new look and lots of modern technology inside and out.
A new turbodiesel V8 engine offers 910 lb-ft of torque and a maximum towing capacity of more than 30,000 pounds.
The 6-function MultiPro tailgate is an industry exclusive in HD pickups.
Last year, an all-new 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 was unveiled offering some impressive new innovations. Now the 2020 Sierra HD has made its debut at the Chicago Auto Show with many of the same innovations and a similar, classy new look.
Professional Grade Capability
When the 2020 GMC Sierra HD launches later this year, it will have an all-new 6.6-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 under the hood. This new diesel can get some serious work done with 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. GMC hasn’t announced an official maximum towing capacity yet, but the same engine in the new Chevrolet Silverado HD can tow up to 35,500 pounds.
As of this writing, a gas engine hasn’t been confirmed for the new Sierra HD, but GMC says more details about an all-new gas engine will be announced shortly. We have a strong suspicion that it will be the same 6.6-liter V8 powering its mechanical twin, the Silverado HD. In the Chevy, this new gas engine makes 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 17,400 pounds.
Smart Trailering Technology
Something that was touted on the new Sierra 1500 Denali that we now know is available on the new HD variant is the ProGrade trailering system. It has up to 15 unique camera views available including the ability to virtually see through your trailer to the road behind you. This requires both the tailgate-mounted camera built into the truck plus an available accessory camera that goes on the back of the trailer. This is a big benefit for both safety and convenience since seeing behind you can be such a challenge when hauling a big trailer.
The ProGrade system also includes an in-vehicle trailering app built into the truck’s infotainment system. This allows you to test your trailer lights, run electrical diagnostics and even monitor the pressure and temperature of your trailer tires.
Get the Job Done Comfortably
As you might expect from GMC, this truck can get very nice on the inside. The Denali trim uses premium materials like leather seats, open-pore real-wood interior trim and dark-finish aluminum trim. Adding to the luxury is a bigger cabin than the outgoing model on all Sierra HD Crew Cab models giving everyone a little more room.
Also, new for the Sierra HD is the addition of an AT4 model. AT4 is a new off-road subbrand for GMC introduced on the new Sierra 1500 last year. The AT4 package adds off-road Rancho suspension, skid plates, a locking rear differential, all-terrain tires, a traction select system with off-road mode, hill descent control and a head-up display with an inclinometer to the Sierra HD.
Another thing borrowed from the Sierra 1500 is the 6-function MultiPro tailgate available on all trims. The MultiPro tailgate can turn into various configurations of steps, load stops, and even a desk making accessing your cargo and keeping it in the truck easier than ever without needing extra equipment.
As of this writing, pricing has not yet been confirmed for the 2020 GMC Sierra HD. As usual, we have a feeling it will cost a little more than the Silverado HD, but unfortunately, we don’t have official pricing for that truck either. What we do know is that this will be a very nice truck for anyone looking for serious capability and the latest technology.
