The 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe is here, and it’s impressive. Luxurious, comfortable, sporty, and design-forward, the GV80 Coupe demonstrates how good Genesis is at designing and building luxury SUVs despite the brand only being about a decade old. Last week, we attended the GV80 Coupe’s launch in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, and learned some things that might surprise you.
The GV80 Coupe has launch control
In addition to helping manage traction off the line, the launch control function raises the torque converter’s stall speed to 2,000 rpm, allowing the engine to build boost for a more aggressive launch. The automatic transmission also shifts more aggressively once off the line.
Although it has a lithium battery pack and a 48-volt electric motor, it’s not a hybrid.
Instead, the motor spins a supercharger, adding boost until the 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 gasoline engine starts making boost of its own.
It has an e-supercharger
The e-supercharger, or e-SC, as Genesis refers to it, helps the GV80 Coupe maintain constant intake manifold pressure at about 1 bar (about 14.5 PSI) of boost throughout the generous 1,300-4,500 rpm torque band. Despite the substantial thrust, the GV80 Coupe’s acceleration is brisk but never hurried — unless you’ve activated launch control.
It makes gobs of low-end torque
Although the GV80 Coupe only gains about 34 horsepower and 14 lb-ft of torque at peak (about 9 and 4 percent, respectively), compared to the standard turbo engine, the gains at the low end of the RPM range are more significant — although Genesis did not specify just how much larger. Behind the wheel, the GV80 Coupe’s e-SC is transparent to the driver — and completely silent, too.
The GV80 e-Supercharger Coupe is fully-loaded
The only selections buyers need to make are for the powertrain, exterior color, and interior theme. That doesn’t mean it’s basic; in fact, it’s the opposite, as the only way you can get a GV80 Coupe is fully loaded, with soft leather upholstery, a 27-inch screen, a panoramic sunroof, a massaging driver’s seat, heated rear seats, advanced safety assists, and much more. If you upgrade from the base 3.5T AWD trim to the GV80 e-Supercharger Coupe, you also get upgraded to 22-inch wheels, quad muffler tips, carbon fiber trim, alloy pedals, and monobloc front brakes.
