Chevrolet Colorado Duramax Diesel Officially Introduced

  • Chevrolet’s new Colorado pickup will soon offer a diesel engine variant
  • The engine is a 181-horsepower 2.8-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder engine with 369 lb-ft of torque
  • Sales will start this fall at a $3,730 premium over the truck’s gas-powered V6

A diesel-powered version of the midsize Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck will soon reach dealers. That’s the latest from Chevrolet, who recently announced several details about the upcoming Colorado variant, which will be powered by the brand’s Duramax diesel engine when it goes on sale later this summer.

The biggest selling point of the new diesel engine will be its torque figure, which is an impressive 369 lb-ft. That’s more than many full-size trucks, and is excellent for drivers interested in towing or hauling. Less impressive are the engine’s other attributes: It has a 2.8-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder, not a V6, and power stands at just 181 hp. The sole transmission will be a 6-speed automatic, and rear- or 4-wheel drive will be offered.

As for pricing, Chevrolet says the new diesel engine will require a big premium over the truck’s V6: an additional $3,730, to be precise. But the truck boasts a trailering package, an integrated trailer brake controller and a towing capacity that’s increased from 7,000 pounds to a slightly more impressive 7,700 pounds. The truck’s payload capacity has also increased slightly, and a new 2-speed transfer case means that the truck will perform better in off-road settings. Of course, diesel power also likely means better fuel economy.

According to Chevrolet, the new diesel-powered Colorado will reach dealers this fall, in LT and Z71 Crew Cab variants — though Chevrolet hasn’t announced if a GMC Canyon version will follow. Like other Colorado models, the diesel version will offer Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system, lane-departure warning, forward-collision alert and GM’s OnStar system with 4G LTE Wi-Fi capability.

What it means to you: If you want diesel power in a smaller truck, the Chevrolet Colorado is the only way you can get it.
