Here Are 5 Luxury Sedans That Are Basically Sports Cars

Only a few years ago, you had to choose between sedan practicality and sports-car performance. Even in the 1990s, buying something like a BMW M5 meant you were getting a fast sedan, but not necessarily a near-sports-car-fast sedan. These days, however, the lines are blurred. Certain sedans are now ridiculously fast, and not just in a straight line; many will rival or beat sports cars around race tracks, reducing the need for people to own one practical car for daily use and one fun car for the weekends. Some of the fastest sedans are even luxury vehicles, offering endless equipment to go along with their performance and practicality. Here are five examples of new sedans that offer luxury amenities, rear-seat practicality and a sports-car driving experience.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is one of my favorite luxury sedan-sports car combinations. While it may not have a big, brawny V8 like the other cars on this list, its (relatively) small 2.9-liter turbocharged V6 makes an amazing 505 horsepower, rocketing this car from zero to 60 in under 4 seconds, which is truly amazing for a practical sedan. It’s especially amazing considering the long list of equipment offered by the Giulia, and considering its price tag — while a starting MSRP of $73,000 may seem high, it’s a lot cheaper than everything else on our list. Audi RS 7

OK, so the Audi RS 7 isn’t exactly a sedan in the traditional sense, as it has a sloped rear end and a hatchback. But as this “sedan coupe” form becomes more popular (see the Porsche Panamera and BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe), our definition of “sedan” may have to change to fit cars like the RS 7. Whatever you call it, the RS 7 is a beast: It offers upwards of 560 horsepower (605 with the Performance package, like this model), and it touts a 0-to-60 time that can reach as low as 3.6 seconds, which is truly incredible for a sedan (or, really, any car). It’s the fastest and most powerful car on this list, but it isn’t cheap: RS 7 pricing starts around $112,000, but you’ll want to spring for some options; this one is listed by Audi of Fort Myers in Florida for an eye-popping $159,250. Find an Audi RS 7 for sale



Here’s a rarity: one of the few brand-new BMW M5 models currently listed for sale on Autotrader. The M5 is currently out of production, awaiting the arrival of a new model based on the latest 5 Series — which should be arriving in the next few months. But drivers who still want a new M5 can pick this one, which is offered by Long Beach BMW in Southern California for $109,964 — a huge discount compared to the original MSRP of more than $137,000. This M5 touts at least 560 horsepower and tremendously composed steering and handling; it’s also loaded with all the BMW luxuries you’d expect at this price point. Find a BMW M5 for sale

Cadillac CTS-V

The latest Cadillac CTS-V is one of the most impressive sedans on the market. In addition to offering a wide range of luxury equipment and features, the CTS-V touts the supercharged V8 engine from the Chevy Corvette Z06 — an engine that makes an almost unbelievable 640 horsepower and 630 lb-ft of torque. The result is a 0-to-60 time of around 4 seconds, though (obviously) the CTS-V doesn’t come cheap. The starting price for a CTS-V is around $86,000, and this particular example — offered by Cadillac of Naperville, near Chicago — is listed for $107,685, which is in the realm of many other CTS-V models once options are added. Find a Cadillac CTS for sale

The Mercedes-AMG C63 is one of my favorite sport sedans on the market today, largely due to its size: While most of the other models on this list are midsize or full-size sedans, the C63 shares “small-sedan” duties with the Giulia Quadrifoglio — and that makes it more tossable, sportier and more fun on the rare occasions when C63 owners might hit the racetrack. The C63 AMG S shown here touts 503 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, along with a 0-to-60 time of around 3.8 seconds.   1. You lost me with this one, Doug. I’ve owned dozens of vehicles over the past 6 decades, including sporty sedans, minivans, luxury cars, trucks and sports cars. “Real” sports cars have only 2 seats, are relatively small and lightweight. These attributes give them a unique feel. My MX-5 and Austin-Healey Sprite were sports cars. My SL55 AMG is a sporty luxury car, not a sports car. Just because something gets around a slalom at 66 MPH, does 0-60 in 4 seconds and hits 175 MPH doesn’t make it a sports car.

    • D.M., excellent points. While my Triumph TR-4a is a true “sports car”, my CLK 550 is not. The CLK 550, while having some impressive numbers in acceleration, handling and braking,  is by no means a “sports car”. Even with the cabriolet top, which actually adds weight to the beast and subtracts points from its actual “sports car” ness. LOL, I just made a word up, “sports car ness”. 

      On the other hand, if you would like to accompany me to the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance (Where my father is the historian for the event and has been since its second year of operation.), I will gladly take you around and show you actual “sports cars”, Doug.
      Don’t get me wrong, this article is well written and was a great read, I simply disagree with the concept that the automobiles listed were in fact “sports cars”, but then I am used to a stricter definition than you might be using, Doug.
      By the way, none of what I have said has in any detracted from the cars in the article, in fact I am in the process of buying another Mercedes Benz CLK, this time a CLK 500 in coupe form. The CLK is a kissing cousin to the AMG C 63 that’s significantly less expensive. Why, you might ask would I be buying essentially the same car over again? Simple, the cars are great looking without the B pillar, are truly comfortable on longer journeys, are loaded with amenities, are extremely quick out of the gate, handle very well and if you replace one little computer chip are able to reach speeds of around 180 mph. Oh and going any where near that fast is done on a racetrack and not on public roadways where innocents are to be found. Those innocents typically have no idea of what to do when a car approaches them moving along at over 100 mph and as a result have a tendency to do exactly the wrong things at exactly the wrong time.
      One other note; my first car was a 1956 Mercedes Benz 190, 4 door sedan with 4 on the tree, that I bought in my 15th summer and cost me a whopping $300. I suspect that the $300 is what the guy selling the car paid for the used red leather interior. After replacing almost every bit of rubber, cleaning out and replacing all of the fluids, leading (as opposed to the ever nasty Bondo) the rocker panels, sanding and painting them into smoothness, replacing all of the ignition parts and laying a new battery into the German beast. After doing all of that work, the car started on its second crank. To the best of my knowledge that car is still being driven daily in Cincinnati, Ohio with something like 750,000 miles on the odometer. If that is not a testament to the quality of a Mercedes Benz automobile, I do not what is.
      A few years ago I saw a Mercedes Benz CLK 550 for sale and knew that I needed to convince my wife of the car’s inherent features including; quality, comfort, speed and reliability. In fact my sales job worked so well that not only has she become a Formula 1 fan rooting for the Mercedes Petronas team and Lewis Hamilton in particular, she has even allowed me to search for and purchase another Mercedes CLK to add to our vehicle stockpile. Those are the signs of a committed to brand person and the sign of a woman who has finally found her dream automotive marque, long live Mercedes Benz!
  2. I had high hopes for the C63 S AMG, but when I went to drive one it had more rattles than a mariachi band!  Very disheartening.
