Although one of the problems with the rollout of electric cars has been the fact that they tend to be more expensive than their gasoline counterparts, that isn’t true on the used market. On the used market, electric cars are tremendously inexpensive, losing value very quickly as they search for second or third owners. To prove my point, here are five of the cheapest electric vehicles currently listed for sale on Autotrader.
The cheapest electric car on Autotrader is this 2013 Smart ForTwo Electric Drive, which is listed for just $4,490 by Encore Motors of Sarasota in Florida. It’s traveled just 5,000 miles since it was sold new, which makes its low price even more impressive, as its original asking price was around $26,000. The ForTwo Electric Drive only has a range of around 58 miles — but with its low price, it’s effectively a golf cart with safety equipment. Find a smart fortwo for sale
This used example Mitsubishi’s egg-shaped i-MiEV electric car is the second-cheapest electric vehicle on Autotrader, as it’s listed for just $4,988. Offered for sale by Commonwealth Dodge in Louisville, Kentucky, this i-MiEV has covered 36,200 miles since new. The original sticker price was around $30,000, and the range was a mediocre 62 miles — but for $4,988, it becomes far more appealing. Find a Mitsubishi i for sale
This 2012 Nissan Leaf is the cheapest Leaf on Autotrader, and it’s easy to see why: It’s covered a whopping 50,000 miles since new, which is big miles for a vehicle that can only travel around 70 miles on a full charge. Offered by a private seller for just $5,000, this Leaf is listed for sale in Carlsbad, California, near San Diego, and it’s finished in the Leaf’s distinctive bright blue color. The cheapest Tesla listed for sale on Autotrader is this 2013 Model S, which has covered 83,000 miles — an impressive figure for an electric vehicle that’s just five years old. Offered at $35,999, this Model S is available from Atlanta Autos in the Atlanta suburb of Marietta, Georgia — and while it’s the cheapest Model S on Autotrader, other inexpensive models are also starting to appear quickly in the high-$30,000 range. Although the Chevy Volt isn’t fully electric, it’s one of the most popular plug-in cars in recent memory. This 2012 Volt is the cheapest used example on Autotrader, and it’s likely due to the miles: this one has traveled 137,000 miles since new, which is impressive for any 6-year-old car — and especially a plug-in vehicle. It’s offered for $6,499 from Midwest Automotive Connection in Cincinnati. Find a Chevrolet Volt for sale
