Mazda is itching to go more premium with its offerings. One way to do that is to offer a slick crossover with good power, nice styling, and a well-appointed interior space. So that’s what the automaker has cooked up right here.
This is the all-new 2024 Mazda CX-90, a near-luxury machine that still holds on to some of those sporting Mazda roots.
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is a new 3-row crossover with a couple of fresh powertrain options and elegant styling. Under that long hood, Mazda lets you choose between a mild-hybrid setup or a full-on plug-in hybrid (PHEV) option.
What’s Under the Hood of the 2024 Mazda CX-90?
First, we have the e-Skyactiv G model, which features a 3.3-liter inline 6-cylinder turbocharged engine. It works with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system to deliver 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The smooth turbo engine handles the majority of the work, while the electric motor mounted between the engine and transmission does a good job at off-the-line efforts and filling in any gaps in the powerband.
The other powertrain is the e-Skyactiv PHEV. The gas portion is a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, while the electric motor is fed from a 17.8-kWh battery pack. This setup delivers 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.
Both powertrains employ an 8-speed automatic gearbox. All-wheel drive is standard. Even better, Mazda insists it’s a rear-biased AWD system.
Taking a step outside, the CX-90 is definitely going for that magic dash-to-axle ratio, where you get a nice long hood paired with a clean cabin shape. The result is a machine with serious curb appeal. Especially when finished in the Artisan Red paint color specifically designed for the CX-90.
What Does the Interior of the 2024 Mazda CX-90 Look Like?
Slide inside, and welcome to a truly wonderful space. Mazda offers the CX-90 as a 6-, 7-, or 8-passenger vehicle. With that second row, you can have a 3-person bench, two captains chairs with a passthrough, or two captains chairs with a full console in the middle.
There’s a great use of Nappa leather, wood, and upscale fabrics that work together to create the feeling of an interior cut from a vehicle that would be a class above.
Hopefully, there’s plenty of zoom-zoom soul left in the chassis. Mazda clearly wants to move more upscale, and a vehicle like the CX-90 is proof. But it also sounds like the driving experience could be something that also leaves you smiling, thanks to the available power and its distribution between the driven wheels.
The price could push the CX-90 to compete against the type of vehicles you’d previously considered out of reach. We’ll find out that last bit once we hear what Mazda will charge for this thing, and we should know soon since the CX-90 goes on sale this spring.
