The Mercedes-AMG GT Is the Coolest New Mercedes Sedan

So you like the Mercedes-AMG GT sports car, but you don’t want to deal with a small, low-slung 2-seater. Now there’s another option: the Mercedes-AMG GT sedan, which is actually a 4-door coupe, according to Mercedes-Benz. So you have the Mercedes-AMG GT Coupe, which is actually a coupe, and the Mercedes-AMG GT sedan (called simply the “Mercedes-AMG GT”), which is a sedan that Mercedes-Benz says is a coupe, and then there’s also a Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster. The whole thing is tremendously confusing.

But if you get past the bizarre naming, there are a few reasons why the AMG GT sedan-coupe looks pretty cool. First off, it literally looks pretty cool — the styling is absolutely gorgeous, just like the AMG GT Coupe, and it’s one of the more attractive sedans I’ve seen in quite a while. It’s sort of like a less bulbous Porsche Panamera, or a more modern Audi A7. It’s very nice.

Then there are the engine options, all mated to all-wheel drive. The AMG GT sedan starts with a “53” model, which is intended to slot between the “43” versions of other AMG products and the all-out “63” version. But even the 53 is fast; it has a 429-horsepower 6-cylinder mated to an electric motor with a lot of torque (184 lb-ft, to be exact), which helps send the car from zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds using a 9-speed torque-converter automatic transmission.

Of course, most enthusiasts will likely be more excited by the “63” version, which has a twin-turbocharged V8 with 577 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque; Mercedes says that one will do zero to 60 in 3.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 193 miles per hour. Above that, a “63 S” version adds 53 hp and 74 lb-ft (totaling 630 hp and 627 lb-ft); Mercedes says that version will do zero to 60 in 3.1 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz has not yet released pricing, but I suspect the AMG GT sedanish coupe won’t be cheap — and despite styling that somewhat mimics the Mercedes-Benz CLS, I think the AMG GT will start far beyond the CLS’s base price of around $76,000. We’ll find out for sure when it goes on sale in early 2019, with high-performance variants to follow later that year. Find a Mercedes-Benz AMG GT sedan for sale

  1. Posted earlier that this is a direct copy of a Panamera, and I’m really dismayed that MB is copying so much from other manufacturers like that Coupe-SUV that looks identical to the one from BMW.  Enough already with the copies, but, I do have to say that to me, this one looks spectacular.
