The Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B is a car that you wouldn't think twice about if you passed it on the road. It looks almost exactly like every other fourth-generation Legacy model -- but it isn't. Nonetheless, from a quick glance, you probably wouldn't realize that the Legacy 2.5GT spec.B has 250 horsepower and reaches 60 miles per hour in 5.3 seconds, which is about as fast as an Audi S4 of similar vintage. You also probably wouldn't realize that you were looking at a very rare car.

The Legacy 2.5GT spec.B was an enthusiast-oriented special edition of the already-quick Legacy 2.5GT, with a firmed-up suspension from the WRX. It offered only one transmission choice (manual), a Torsen limited-slip differential and an advanced engine-mapping system called SI-DRIVE, which allows you to choose one of three settings depending on how you want the engine to behave. The interior was impressively nice, and it was the only Legacy you could buy that offered a navigation system with a manual transmission.

These changes essentially made the spec.B the equivalent of the STI in the Legacy line of cars, but without a gaudy wing and boy-racer looks. In other words, you could actually buy a spec.B if you didn't have a love for flat-brimmed hats.

The Legacy 2.5GT spec.B was available from 2006 to 2009, but it was sold in very limited numbers throughout its lifetime. Only 500 were sold in 2006, 497 in 2007 and an unknown but undoubtedly low number in 2008 and 2009. Because of their rarity, spec.B models have held their value quite well. Currently on Autotrader, there are only four Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B models for sale across the country with an average cost of $14,100, and all have at least 75,000 miles on the odometer. Unfortunately, because these cars are complete sleepers, it's unlikely that many have been preserved as weekend-only cars, and most have been driven daily.
